Don Jon, Pornography, “YES! YES! YES!”

don-jon2In the movie “Don Jon“, Joseph Gordon-Levitt (along with Scarlett Johansson and Julianne Moore) explores the issue of how pornography impacts real-life relationships.

One of the most damaging aspects of pornography is how much it can negatively impacts a person’s reality of emotional intimacy, sexual experiences, and appreciating the gift of the human body.

YOUR CHILDREN AND PORNOGRAPHY:
While I was talking to a group of parents about a specific example of a heterosexual son who had been caught watching porn, I said, “If he had never seen porn, the first time he saw a sexual partner naked, he would likely be thinking to himself, ‘YES! YES! YES! Oh My Gosh’ – almost unable to contain himself at the amazing body in front of him.”

If that same son sees porn first, he may unknowingly begin to believe the bodies in porn is he what he should expect to become sexually active with in his own life. In that case, the next time he is with a sexual partner he is more likely to think, “She is hot, but her ____ is a bit small.” He would lose appreciation for the wonder of the REAL PERSON in front of him and the bond they are about engage in. He would be comparing a real sexual experience with fake, unrealistic scenarios from pornography.

The son’s next move with his partner may be to engage in a sexual act the way pornography actors do in a porn film – where a partner is often treated more like an object than a person you care about. How sad!

Don JonDon Jon” leads people who watch porn to the question of, “How do you learn to BE PRESENT FOR YOUR PARTNER when porn focused you on satisfying you and you alone?

Many scenes in “Don Jon” provide opportunities for discussion. More than once, you hear a group of friends rank women based on who is worthy of being scored a “dime” (equivalent to a “10” on a scale of “1” to “10”). The relationships of the main character’s parents could quickly provoke a conversation on what is or is not a healthy marriage.

To see such important issues covered in a mainstream film is a nice surprise. You may disagree with how the film goes about sharing the messages and stories, but you can’t deny Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s attempt to take on pornography and Hollywood’s influence on relationships.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt wrote, directed, and played the part of the main character “Don Jon” in the movie. His co-stars are Scarlett Johansson and Julianne Moore. Scarlett Johansson’s character has her own character flaws based on “Romance” movies.
